Self-drive Holiday Package for Senior Citizens
We are finalising travel packages in the northern and central regions of the Drakensberg and will post packages soon!
We could wax lyrical about the majestic destination of the Drakensberg, but what we really want to get enthusiastic about are the incredible pensioner discount gems nestled in the Berg.
We could wax lyrical about the majestic destination of the Berg, shorthand for the mighty Drakensberg Mountains, which is KZN’s crowning glory. We could be effusive about the soul- stirring spectacle, described in isiZulu as a ‘barrier of spears’. We could enthuse about the riches and vastness of the landscape. But we’re not going to. All that is an absolute given. What we are going to get enthusiastic about are the wonderful accommodation options in this magnificent part of the world, and specifically those that are looking after South African seniors. Those that gear themselves up for pensioners and retirees. Those gems that offer great pensioner discounts.
Right now, a mini-getaway in the heart of South Africa is probably what many of us are dreaming about. Well, let’s stop dreaming and get right into it, and see what these little gems are offering…
Hot off the press is Antbear Lodge in Central Drakensberg. What makes Antbear Lodge so unique is that they offer accommodation in a luxury cave. This is an accommodation unit built under a rock. Glass doors open onto a wooden deck with hammock chairs and a spectacular view of the Drakensberg Mountains. The cave is cosy and comfortable with features like a Jacuzzi spa bath and a fireplace, and even rock art on the walls. You can enjoy a private dining experience where a table is set up on the deck of the cave, and you can dine by candlelight under the stars. How’s that for a belated celebration of your anniversary or birthday? Can’t go? Because you have four-legged furry children? Well, guess what?! Antbear Lodge is pet friendly too- your children with paws can join you on your mini-break!
We love it when senior citizens come back to us, time after time, with great reviews and fond memories. And that is exactly the case with The Nest situated in the heart of the Champagne Valley in the Central Drakensberg. Many senior citizens have shared their memories of amazing holidays spent at the Nest when they were children. Many have taken their children back, and in more recent years, many have taken their grandchildren to this delightful family run country hotel. The Olde Worlde Charm goes hand in hand with the delicious country style food, spectacular gardens, wonderful facilities and exquisite views over the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage site.
And now, let’s head off to Inkungu Lodge, also known as The Jewel of the Berg. Inkungu Lodge gets its name from the Zulu word “IzinKungu” meaning “mist”. An apt name when one wakes up to see the morning mist covering the valley and the dam. So much history at Inkungu Lodge, many of the furnishings can trace their history back to the Boer War, and the Lodge showcases a fine collection of predominantly Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as furniture from the Napoleonic era. Throw in sandstone walls, natural gardens, rim flow pools, sumptuous breakfasts, lunches and dinners and a wine cellar which includes a private collection for the discerning wine connoisseur, Inkungu Lodge sounds just the ticket for these mini-breaks.
So much to do! So little time!
There are so many activities to participate in, in the Drakensberg. The Giants Castle Slack packing trail is a luxury hike offering comfortable and varied accommodation experiences each night, luggage transfers and delectable catering. Hot air ballooning is an amazing way in which to celebrate your occasion while fulfilling a bucket list dream! Perhaps exploring and hiking is your thing – then an overnight hiking trip in the uKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site might just be the ticket!
